How Does Page Speed Affect SEO Rankings and User Experience?
- Reading Time: 3 minutes
Page speed is both a ranking signal and a conversion factor. Google formalized this with Core Web Vitals, three measurable performance metrics that directly influence how pages are evaluated in search. Slow pages rank lower and lose the users they do attract.
Core Web Vitals: The Three Signals That Matter
1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
LCP measures how quickly the main content of a page loads. Google’s threshold for a passing score is under 2.5 seconds. LCP directly reflects perceived load speed, and it’s the moment a user decides whether the page is working.
2. Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
INP replaced First Input Delay in 2024. It measures responsiveness to user interactions throughout the full-page session. A passing score is under 200 milliseconds. Pages with sluggish JavaScript or heavy third-party scripts usually fail here.
3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
CLS measures visual stability and the extent to which page elements shift unexpectedly during load. A passing score is under 0.1. High CLS frustrates users and signals poor technical implementation.
What the Data Shows
Google’s own research found that pages loading in 1 second convert 3 times better than pages loading in 5 seconds. Industry data consistently shows that bounce rates increase by roughly 32% when load time moves from 1 to 3 seconds, and by over 90% at 5 seconds. Users do not wait.
At IceWeb, Core Web Vitals performance is the first thing we check in any technical audit. If your page loads slowly, it will score poorly in SEO, despite good content and strong links.
Core Web Vitals Quick Reference
Metric | Measures | Passing Threshold |
LCP | Load speed of main content | Under 2.5 seconds |
INP | Responsiveness to interactions | Under 200 milliseconds |
CLS | Visual stability during load | Under 0.1 |
