How Can I Measure the ROI of My SEO Efforts?
- Reading Time: 3 minutes
SEO ROI uses the same formula as any marketing investment: (Revenue from Organic − SEO Cost) / SEO Cost × 100. A campaign generating €8,000 in organic revenue against €2,000 in SEO spend returns 300%. The challenge isn't the formula; it's attributing revenue to organic search accurately across a multi-touch buyer journey.
KPIs by Campaign Stage
The best way forward is to report the right metrics at the right stage to avoid the common mistake of judging an early-stage campaign on revenue before rankings have had time to mature.
- Months 1–3 (foundation): Crawl error reduction, indexed page count, keyword ranking movement. Revenue isn’t a fair metric yet.
- Months 3–6 (traction): Organic traffic growth in GSC, ranking positions for target keywords, and click-through rate improvements.
- Months 6–12 (conversion): Goal completions from organic sessions, leads, or sales attributed to organic, cost per acquisition vs. paid channels.
- Month 12+ (revenue): Full ROI calculation, organic revenue share, compounding traffic growth against flat or declining SEO spend.
Handling Multi-Touch Attribution
Most converting customers go through multiple channels before they buy, for example, a paid ad, then an organic visit, then a direct return. Last-click attribution undercounts SEO’s contribution because it rarely closes the sale on the first visit. More accurate approaches include:
- Linear attribution: Distributes credit equally across all communication and marketing points.
- Data-driven attribution: Available in GA4, it assigns credit based on actual conversion path analysis.
At IceWeb, we recommend GA4’s data-driven model as the default, supplemented by GSC revenue tracking for a cleaner organic-only view.
