What Are the Best Strategies to Fix Keyword Cannibalization?
- Reading Time: 3 minutes
Keyword cannibalization occurs when two or more pages on your site compete for the same primary keyword. Instead of having a single authoritative page rank highly, you spread your topical signals across multiple URLs. In cases of cannibalization, Google may rank neither, or alternate unpredictably between them, because it gets confused. The result is suppressed rankings, diluted link equity, and inconsistent search visibility. Your website is not as visible or as performing as it should be.
Five Fixes, in Order of Preference
1. Content consolidation
Content is the most effective and long-term fix. Merge competing pages into a single comprehensive resource, redirect weaker URLs to it, and consolidate all link equity on a single authoritative page. Use this when both pages cover genuinely overlapping ground.
2. 301 redirect
When one page clearly outperforms the other, redirect the weaker page permanently to the stronger one. This is a simple, clean step that clearly signals to Google which URL should rank.
3. Canonical tags
When you need to keep both URLs live, for example, for UX or structural reasons, use a rel=”canonical” tag on the weaker page pointing to the preferred version. Google treats the canonical as the authoritative source.
4. Internal link restructuring
Audit which page each of your internal links points to for a given keyword. The most effective solution is to consistently link to one page to signal to Google which URL you consider authoritative. Splitting internal links between competing pages reinforces the problem and the overall algorithmic confusion.
5. Noindex
This is a last resort. If a competing page serves a functional purpose but has no standalone search value, apply noindex to remove it from Google’s index without deleting it.
At IceWeb, we run a cannibalization audit by mapping every URL to its target keyword. Our audit identifies any overlap, and the right fix usually follows.
